WINTER SERIES EVENT:

SCCV Winter Series is the collection of any Wintercross & Ice Time Trial events each season. The classes are the same across both formats and points are accumulated by participating drivers each event. Each driver drops their lowest 25% of the total series event finishes. There needs to be a minimum of 4 events held by SCCV to initiate the minimum of 1 dropped event. Awards are given to 1st-3rd place finishers in each class championship at the end of year Annual Banquet.

Frozen lakes are treated as state highways in VT. The ability to run these events is a privilege that could easily be challenged if we aren’t respectful and follow the rules. Participating in these events requires discipline and courteous behavior on the lakes as well as the surrounding community. We share the lake with the public and the behavior of all reflects on the club and our ability to continue events.

** Driving on ice assumes a degree of risk and should be done so with an understanding of ice safety and ice properties please review our Ice Safety Write-up. **

CLASSING: Participants will be separated into classes based on vehicle specification. It is the responsibility of the participant to properly class their car with integrity and are subject to protest by any fellow participant who brings complaints to the organizers.

All vehicles participating in ITT events must be fully road legal. The only exception to a road legal spec, is the allowance for vehicles to run super studded tires in the Super Spec Studded classes. Vehicles from any ITT class may participate in the Super Spec classes, even without super studded tires.

Super studded tires are subject to construction requirements and build limits.

Please see the super studded tire rules further down this document for details.

GENERAL RULES

  • No drugs or alcohol at the event.
  • High performance driving stays on the designated course – any driving off of course (paddock, around venue) is to be parking lot speed and fully controlled.
  • Make sure your vehicle is prepared for the tech inspection process and you have read all of the ITT Rules as well as the ITT Guide
  • Be safe and responsible for all of your belongings and trash throughout the day. Wind can easily blow loose items around, so plan accordingly

Suggested items to bring:

  • It is very highly recommended to bring personal ice picks that can be worn around the neck or in some immediate fashion for safety purposes. – Shoe cleats like YAKTRAX or a similar brand to get about will make your experience more pleasant. – Bring a shovel if you can.
  • Warm, insulating layers
  • Masking tape (Blue painter’s tape works best). Magnetic car numbers do not work well in winter and not recommended.

*It is recommended to empty vehicle of litter/unneeded gear as it will need to be removed before Tech Inspection and sit on ice*

TECH INSPECTION

The failure to pass any of these checks may disqualify you from participating in our event. Passing Tech Inspection is ultimately at the discretion of the inspector and/or event chairman.

These items WILL be checked during Tech Inspection.

  1. Maximum roofline height of 68″.
  2. Vehicle must be low center-of-gravity, generally accepted to mean no trucks, SUVs, or similar vehicles (even if within the max roofline height). Contact SCCV if you are unsure if your vehicle qualifies, or has been modified to mitigate risk (i.e lowered, etc).
  3. Vehicle MUST be road legal (current inspection/registration/insurance); this will be part of Tech Inspection. Bring current print outs for inspection/registration/insurance.
  4. All ice time trials will be muffled events – the intent is to provide a quiet event that does not disturb the community. Muffler IS required! Decibel level enforcement: 90 db at 50 feet under load/RPM. Final judgment at the discretion of the event chair. Turndown at exit of exhaust recommended. V. All vehicles on track must have headlights on.

VI. NO fluid leaks of any kind, even if it is a rare drip. If you car has a noticeable leak you will not be able to participate. It’s preferred but not required that everyone bring a large tarp with a foot print larger than your entire car and some weights. Park on your tarp every time you’re parked in the paddock and help keep unexpected leaks from causing an issue. VII. Brake fluid at appropriate level and quality; braking components undamaged

  • Radiator overflow is uncompromised
  • Every participant will be expected to utilize absorbent spill mats (also known as “PIG mats”). These are found at most auto parts store but will also be available for purchase at the event for a low cost (estimated ~$5) and will be required for tech inspection.
  • All cars running street tires must have snow specific tires. No all seasons will be allowed. Super studded cars will be allowed to run all seasons due to added grip of bolts. No missing wheel studs or loose lugs. No tire defects, cording, or cuts. Appropriate tire pressure.
  • No loose items in the car. Battery must be securely and safely fastened. XII. Tow points MUST be accessible front AND rear. This will be included in the Tech Inspection so please have it sorted out ahead of time.
  • Battery must be securely tied down (no bungee cords / bailing twine)
  • Positive battery terminal is covered
  • Seats are securely mounted/uncompromised
  • Seat belts anchored properly and in good condition
  • No excessive play in suspension (inc. tie rods, ball joints, wheel bearings)
  • All vehicle panels are secured

SUPER STUD TIRE RULES

  1. Super Stud tires are allowed to include up to 30 bolts per foot of tread contact patch circumference; i.e larger diameter tires may include more bolts while retaining the same density of bolts in a given contact patch. To determine the maximal bolt count for your tires, use the following formula: Circumference of tire in inches (rounded down) multiplied by 2.5 = total number of bolts per tire (rounded down).

**The factor of 2.5 is derived from (circumference in inches x 30 bolts per foot)/12 inches per foot. To simplify, 30/12 = 2.5, and simply use that to determine bolts per tire.**

  1. Studs cannot exceed ¼” in diameter, and cannot protrude from the adjacent tread more than ½”.
  2. Bolt tires found to exceed the required limits found in Rules I-II may be allowed to run in a non-points/non-competition manner at the discretion of the event chair and/or event coordinator. Tires found to be out of compliance by a large margin will likely be disallowed to preserve course conditions. Penalties will be assessed by the event chair and/or event coordinator on a case by case basis.
  3. The studs must be installed from the inside and with lock nut hardware on the outside. It is recommended to use washers on both the inside and outside to distribute stress.
  4. Commercially available ice tires are allowed if adhering to the provided calculation formula (30 studs per foot of tread contact patch circumference). VI. If using sealant, it must be white (no red/green/colored). Sealant is strongly recommended. Tire tubes are allowed as an alternative.

VII. Any competitor in a super stud class may challenge the legality of a tire. The challenge process will include the challenger and challenged competitor, as well as a tech inspector. Tech will inspect the tire for compliance. VIII. Bolt tires must be off the vehicle during the tech process at events. If a challenge occurs, competitors must be prepared to remove one or more tires/wheels from the car if instructed to do so.

SUPER STUD TIRE TECH PROCESS

SEASONAL CHECKS: The club will full check all super stud tires at the beginning of the winter season, or whenever a new set of tires is introduced. Subsequent “abbreviated” checks will occur during the normal tech process at each event. Drivers will need to declare any changes made to the tires. If they are found illegal or have misled the tech inspector, penalties will be assigned by the event chair and/or event coordinator.

BOLT COUNT: At each event, bolt count will be checked by counting studs per foot in several areas along the contact patch. If more than 30 are found in a given 12” span, the entire tire will be measured and counted. Be prepared to remove one or more tires/wheels from the car if instructed to do so. Please have your tires teched before mounting them on the car to eliminate this hassle. The full-tech measuring process will occur as follows:

  1. Tech will measure the full circumference of your tire to the nearest inch rounded down with a flexible tape measure.
  2. This rounded value will be multiplied by 2.5. Total bolts are rounded down if not an exact amount.
  3. The competitor will be expected to account for tread wear as the tires are used; the circumference may become reduced slightly and affect bolt count. Consider this in determining how many bolts you utilize; if the competitor exceeds the maximal bolt count when checked, they will not be allowed to compete for final placement in the event.

An example: 75.5” measured circumference rounds down to 75”. 75” x 2.5 = 187.5. Rounded down, this tire theoretically can allow 187 bolts. It is recommended to run fewer bolts than the maximum to ensure legality during the tech process.

BOLT HEIGHT: Bolt height will be checked by laying a ½” thick piece of foam against the contact patch of the tire next to the bolts. This will be done on both the inside and outside of the tire. If any bolts stick up higher than the foam, those bolts will need to be shortened or removed in order to comply.

PERSONAL EQUIPMENT

The following items are needed for drivers to be prepared.

  1. SCCV requires all drivers use a Snell helmet (SA/M) that is the current certification, or the prior two certifications (see below). 2010 is the bare minimum accepted.

Snell SA rated helmets are more widely accepted in motorsports than Snell M rated helmets. SA rated helmets will most likely require online purchase such as saferacer.com (no known local vendors), while Snell M rated helmets may be available at most of the local motorsport shops, for example motorcycle and ATV distributors. It is recommended that you at least test fit (size of helmet) at a local store before making online purchases if you have not purchased a helmet before. If purchasing in person, verify the helmet is Snell certified with one of the following stickers. The sticker may be hidden underneath the padding.

  1. SCCV requires all drivers AND passengers possess a valid Driver’s License. Drivers and passengers under the age of 18 will require parental signature of a minor liability waiver to drive.
  2. Bring appropriate footwear: closed-toe, attached at ankle

IV. Payment for event

V. Arrive to events ON TIME

PASSENGERS

Any driver OR passenger must sign an event waiver. Read this thoroughly. All drivers AND passengers must possess a valid driver’s license. If the licensed participant is under 18 years of age, the participant will require both parent’s signature of a minor liability waiver at the first event, and at least one parent present at all events (whether driving or riding as a passenger).

LIABILITY

Please be aware that regular auto insurance policies do not cover damage to your vehicle while participating in motorsports events. Drivers are responsible for removing damaged vehicles from the track/course, and for repairing any damage to said vehicle, club equipment damaged, and/or course damage.
